Wir freuen uns sehr, dass Dr. Milene Mendes de OliveiraExterner Link am Dienstag, den 28.11.2023, bei uns sein wird, um über "Interculturality and decision-making processes in online teams: interactional aspects of joint and unilateral decisions" zu referieren:

In present times, fostering continuous communication, engaging in negotiations at various levels, and building international relationships through dialogue and active participation are imperative. These principles are often discussed as essential goals in the intercultural communication literature. However, the practical implementation of these ideals remains a challenge. This talk will explore the concrete ways through which these ideals can be achieved or hindered. I will report on a study that examined the decision-making processes within newly formed intercultural teams consisting of higher-education students, who participated in an online intercultural game via Zoom. Through a conversation-analytic investigation, it was examined how players, aiming to position themselves as 'intercultural speakers'—i.e., actors who mediate between different perspectives and ensure the inclusion of all parties—make decisions. The analysis showcases instances ranging from unilateral decision-making to collaborative processes leading to joint decisions. The disparities between ideals of intercultural dialogue and the actual unfolding of these interactions are thus highlighted. To conclude, a discussion will be proposed on whether and how these research findings can lead to the development of innovative solutions in e.g. organizations and international groups.
