Das CIPA wurde 1968 als Comité International de la Photogrammétrie Architecturale (Internationales Komitee für Architekturphotogrammetrie) gegründet.
Bis heute ist die CIPA Heritage Documentation eine dynamische internationale Organisation, die eine doppelte Aufgabe hat: mit der Technologie Schritt zu halten und ihren Nutzen für die Erhaltung des kulturellen Erbes, die Bildung und die Verbreitung zu gewährleisten.
Im Jahr 2023 fand das CIPA-Symposium vom 25. bis 30. Juni in Florenz statt.
